Doing a Coptic Binding

Books with a coptic binding are just great for writing or drawing since they open absolutely flat. Or if you chose some colored papers for the singe booklets, as i did it here, the open spine of the book can look great.
I already prepared the parts for a tiny drawing book to do this tutorial and now i finally found the time to do it. So here we go 🙂
Tutorial_01
For my book i prepared 5 booklets made of 4 papers each. The boards are 1,5mm cardboard laminated with paste paper. The distribution of the holes can be chosen freely, i only prefer a distance of 5mm between hole and border.

We start the stitching with the rearmost booklet. The thread goes from the inside of the booklet through its lowest hole to the outside (2), leaving about 10-15 cm of loose thread so we can do an knot here when we’re done.
Tutorial_03
On the outside the thread goes through the lowest hole of the board twice, and right back into the booklet. We go on like this for the remaining holes of the booklet. Having reached the last hole, the thread goes through the hole of the booklet again, but not back into the booklet but right into the first hole of the next booklet. (4)

At the next hole we do a loop round the previous sewing (5). If the thread inside the booklet comes from the left, as it does in my example, it should go round the previous sewing counterclockwise.

Having reached the last hole of this booklet, the thread makes the loop round the previous sewing again and goes on to the next booklet (6)
Tutorial_06
Go on like this until all booklet are sewed. Having reached the last hole of the last booklet, the thread makes the loop round the previous sewing first and then goes through the hole of the board twice before reentering the last hole of the booklet (7)

This way the board will be sewed completely.
Having completed the book like this i wind the thread down the lowest seam and back into the first bookled to tie a knot here with the lose end.(8)

And that’s it 🙂

The Book with the open spine, that opens absolutely flat is all done.
